Barry Tuckwell has recorded the Mozart Horn Concertos several times as soloist and soloist/conductor. The first and third of the Horn Concertos marked his recording debut and in notes he has written for this CD – a stunning new remaster from original tapes, catching the spatial depth of Kingsway Hall and the mellowness yet clarity of the Minshull/Wilkinson team – he remembers how young wind players of the London Symphony Orchestra, like himself, were encouraged to take solo parts by the legendary Decca producer John Culshaw. The reissue is rounded out by the delicious ‘Notturno’ for four orchestras, complete with antiphonal and echo effects, for which sessions Barry Tuckwell was also one of the members of the LSO.
